Despite the efforts of public health professionals to educate and change behaviors, people still have poor eating habits, do not exercise, smoke tobacco, take illicit drugs, etc. Hypothesize what could be done to actually change behaviors based on what you have learned through the Readings.

For this weeks discussion post I chose to talk about the dietary and physical activity among high school students. “Nutrition and physical activity are important for optimal growth and development and chronic disease prevention. Approximately half of U.S. adults have a chronic disease that is related to inadequate diet quality and physical activity, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or obesity. Such diseases can affect productivity and quality of life and contribute to high health-care costs” (2020). When it comes to physical activity especially amongst teens in the high school population, physical education instructors should be able to build curriculums that also involve discussing nutrition and healthy eating nd exercising habits.

Good afternoon everyone,

For this week’s discussion topic, we are asked to use a successful campaign from the Centers for Disease Control, Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found at the following website, with statistics to illustrate community improvement. The report that I chose is the Percentage of Adolescents Meeting Federal Fruit and Vegetable Intake Recommendations — Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, United States, 2017. This refers to an important health topic regarding adolescents consuming an inadequate amount of fruits and vegetables to reduce cardiovascular disease. Youth in today’s society are on the go and not paying attention to what they consume. Their metabolism is going about a hundred miles an hour, but high schools do not monitor their nutritional consumption. There is no good plan for adolescents to eat enough fruits and vegetables to meet the U, S Department of Agriculture. High schools have too many bad selections for youth like chips, sodas, and sweets. This enables adolescents to chose what’s quick and convenient. According to Samantha J. Lange, MPH1,2; Latetia V. Moore, PhD2; Diane M. Harris, PhD2; Caitlin L. Merlo, MPH3; Seung Hee Lee, PhD2; Zewditu Demissie, PhD4; Deborah A. Galuska, PhD2. (2021), “The proportion of U.S. high school students meeting federal intake recommendations remained low in 2017, with 7.1% consuming enough fruits and 2.0% consuming enough vegetables to meet USDA recommendations.” There needs to be a push from the media to advertise and promote healthy behaviors to adolescents than advertising soda, chips, and fast food that eventually lead to cardiovascular disease and other health concerns.
